16U KODIAKS RED START 2017 WITH A SUPER SERIES WIN

The PGYVC 16U Kodiaks Red's last match a year ago was a three set loss in the 15U Provincial final. The group has undergone some changes since that loss. Some new players were added from last year's 15U Kodiak Black team giving this year's squad some added height. Kodiak alumni and former GPRC player Austin Cromatry has joined the coaching staff and the team has spent the first six weeks of the season training one night a week with the 18U Kodiak teams. The result was an undefeated run through the round robin with straight set wins over Air Attack, Focus Fusion and Powell River. Next was a 25-20, 25-19 quarterfinal win over Focus Eclipse followed by a 25-23, 25-18 semifinal win over Victoria Black. In the final the Kodiaks again met number 1 ranked Seaside. Just like the battle in last year's Provincial final, the match went 3 sets. This time the Kodiaks came out on top 25-15, 18-25, 15-6.

Kodiaks Teams Helping Out!

This past year was no doubt a tough one for the PGYVC 18U Kodiaks. However, the athletes gathered at the 2016 Relay For Life to join the "FOR A WARRIOR" team that was put together by Leigh Thibault and Maddie Dreher. The team was raising money for cancer research and honouring Ryan Thibault, who passed away in April.

At the 16U Western Open Championship in Calgary, the 16U Kodiaks Black faced off against the Fort McMurray Thunder on day one. After the match the Kodiak players presented the Fort McMurray team with PGYVC water bottles, dinner gift cards and lip balm as well as a donation of $435.00 for the Fort McMurray Volleyball Club. Organized by team manager Carolyn Shannon, the donations came from people from around PG prior to the trip.

Fab Five Move On

Anika Kolybaba, Hallie Drezet, Megan Warner and Jaymie Kwiatkowski have been liberating lost & founds, sharing hotels and riding in vans together for five years while playing for the PGYVC Kodiaks. When the Northwest Volleyball Club decided they would not have an 18U team for 2016, Carmen Didier contacted coach Kim Forrest and offered up the services of outside hitter Carly Davies. The 6'2" Davies packed up her toaster and volleyball gear and joined the Kodiaks.

Now that the club season is over, the girls are setting their sights on the future. Davies will be joining fellow Northwest Volleyball Club outside hitter Kassidy Kitchen at Mount Royal University in Calgary. Drezet will be across the net from Davies and Kitchen in Canada West action with Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. Kolybaba heads to North Vancouver to play for Capilano University and will face Kwiatkowski who will be suiting up for Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford. Both will play in the Pacwest. Finally, Warner is keeping the PG to GP pipeline open. She will compete in the ACAC and will rejoin her former Kodiak teammate Sydney Toninato at Grande Praire Regional College.

PGYVC wishes all of them the best of luck!

Rianna Nicole Briere passed away tragically on April 22, 2016. Rianna was a member of the 15U Girls Kodiak Black team. Rianna was a favourite among all those that had the pleasure of coaching her as well as with her teammates. She was easy to spot on the court with that amazing smile on her face.

On behalf of it's players, parents, coaches and volunteers, the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club would like to extend it's deepest sympathies to the Briere family and all those close to Rianna.
